Description
Sit down for a cool drink under an umbrella and balcony after taking in the sights in Old San Juan. Calle Cristo is a historical place with a legend behind it. This cobblestone street which begins at the top of a hill at the corner of Calle San Sebastian, intersecting with Calle Fortaleza.
A Christian shrine was erected after a miracle occurred here in the 19th century. A horse race which began at the top of Calle Cristo Street and ended at the bottom of the hill was the scene of a young boy whose horse lost control. When the horse slid upon the cobblestones the rider went head first over the Spanish wall. Luckily the young man survived. Thus the chapel was built to mark the spot. It's open every Good Friday a special ceremony is performed in its honor.
